Battle Royale

I just watched the movie Battle Royale. The manga is one of my favorites, and also the goriest thing in my collection. If you don’t know what it is, I’ll tell you a bit. The Japanese government (in the story) has gone nuts. A group of ninth graders are chosen from a lottery to be sent to an island. They’re told they have to kill each other, given weapons, and let loose. Chaos ensues as it’s kill-or-be-killed. Only one student can survive, and if there’s more than one left after the third day, everyone dies. Charming plot, eh?
The movie was pretty decent, I think, but lacking in horror. There should have been more exposed brains and sexuality, like in the manga, you know? Popping eyeballs and broken/missing teeth, missing limbs... These are the things I missed most. :( What does that say about my personality?
The acting was pretty much what I expected it to be. Shunya was a bit... wimpier than I would have liked, but he's a sensitive guy in the manga, so whatever. Why is his character so popular? *sigh* There's plenty of Kawada and evil-killer-boy to make me feel better. Is it just me, or is Kawada played by that guy who was in Moon Child? His character was good, but could have been expanded on... I would have liked to see a bit more Mimura, too. Eh, anyway...
I only have volume one (the big one! It's like two inches thick!) of the comic, so I didn't know what was going to happen. What I saw was pretty close to the book, even though some of the characters were different, and it made my fangirl heart go SQUEE! I wish the thing with Nobu had been closer to the original.
I liked the scenery and the setting for the place. I didn't notice the music much, so I'm thinking it wasn't too bad. I liked the classical music. It was fitting, in a way.
I would write a more intelligent review if it wasn't so far past my bed time. Jeez, it's not even midnight yet. I'm too young to feel this old... srsly.
If I got the names wrong, feel free to send me a comment and correct me. I’m bad with names.

Visual Kei

Visual Kei fascinates me. It's just so... visual! Japanese musicians dress in outstanding, crazy clothes and do nutty things. It's kind of similar to American glam rock. I've always kind of been into it, but here lately I can't keep my eyes on it. Some of the costumes are so beautiful. Some of the men look like women and they're so pretty that it embarrasses me! O.O I decided to blog about this because I recently got a Dir en Grey album, Withering to Death. It's very Gothic and heavy, and I love the vocals. Anyway, I like pretty things, and some of those boys are definitely pretty! These guys are anything but sissies, though. Kyo, the lead singer, mutilated himself on stage. Someone on concert-photos.com says,
"Kyo sings with intensity I have rarely seen in any band. He bleeds power, emotion, and adrenaline. Literally, he bleeds; Half way through the second song, he begins deeply scratching himself across his chest and stomach drawing blood. I tried to frame a few pictures of Kyo to show the scars from previous concert performances.
This is nothing. He is just getting started. Kyo stands up on a box in the front of the stage, leans back, hands and head back in a surrendering pose. Kyo starts fish-hooking and scratching at the inside of his mouth. Within seconds, blood and skin are oozing out of his mouth and down his chest. He wipes the blood all over his face and down his body. This self mutilation only intensifies Dir En Grey’s concert performance"
I would love to see one of their performances. Not for the blood, of course, but for the passion they put into their music. And to stare at those guys... hoo, boy. More laterz, I'm gonna watch more videos! :D
